Homeware sales rose on the high street, as overall sales were up during May.
According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 5.30% for the week ending 12 May 2024.
Homeware total LFL sales rose by +1.95% this week from a negative base of -9.73% for the same week last year, marking the sixth positive result for the category so far in 2024.
Store homewares LFL sales increased by +3.98% from a base of +6.59% for the same week last year, denoting the category’s fifth positive outcome so far in 2024.
Total in-store LFL sales rose by +2.46% from a base of +2.29% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales sprang-up by +10.58% from a base of +4.04% for the same week last year.
Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Both store and non-store sales climbed this week amidst the glorious summer weather with fashion taking a strong lead. The significant growth of fashion across channels could be potentially attributed to seasonal shopping driven by warmer weather.
“This week saw warm and sunny weather in much of the UK with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 26°C. The same week last year saw humid and cloudy weather conditions with isolated showers.”
Overall footfall rose by +4.7% compared to the same week last year. High street footfall jumped by +7.2% as retail parks saw an increase of +3.5%. Shopping centres saw a flat growth of +0.7%.
