One of the UK’s leading bedroom furniture manufacturers is improving its carbon footprint and shrinking its energy bills with the installation of a new, energy efficient roof.
Birmingham-based AC Furniture Limited (Maysons Furniture) is taking a big step on its sustainability journey, replacing the roof of its factory in Sparkbrook – which pre-dates WW2 – with new insulated roofing that will help the business reduce its energy consumption and free up cash to reinvest for growth.
Once the new roof is installed, AC Furniture expects its energy bills to shrink in the summer, with new skylights vastly reducing the need for artificial lighting. Meanwhile, in the winter, 100% of the factory’s heat is generated as a byproduct of the manufacturing process, with the new insulation ensuring this is trapped to keep the space warm – rather than being lost to the environment.
As well as taking the edge off the business’ energy bills, the new roof is also helping to maximise productivity by ensuring machines keep running in all weathers, rather than being affected by a leaking roof.
The new roof installation was supported by £330,000 funding from Lloyds Bank’s Clean Growth Financing initiative, which offers discounted lending to help firms with sustainable projects. As well as improving the factory’s energy efficiency rating, the new installation has also seen the removal of asbestos that was present in the older structure.
This eliminates risk of exposure and associated health problems, as well as preventing environmental contamination that can occur from asbestos fibres becoming airborne and escaping into the water supply and soil.
Looking to the future, AC Furniture is hoping to continue its journey on the road to net zero by installing solar panels on the new factory roof. Something that will be made possible with the cost savings already being made from the new roof, as well as further support from Lloyds Bank.
