Homeware high street sales grow again in September

Homeware sales jumped on the high street, marking the category’s sixteenth positive result so far in 2024.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose 14.45% for the week ending 15 September 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales jumped by +7.74% this week from a negative base of -4.46% for the same week last year, denoting the category’s sixteenth positive result so far in 2024.

Store homewares LFL sales went up by +10.42%, easily offsetting a negative base of -9.34% for the same week last year and marking the category’s sixteenth positive outcome so far in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales increased by +4.54% this week from a base of -1.51% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales skyrocketed by +26.71% from a base of -2.64% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Retail sales saw positive outcomes in bricks-and-mortar venues as well as online channels this week. Homewares performed exceptionally well in-store and fashion led a strong performance online, both potentially driven by promotional sales done by some retailers.

“This week opened with chilly weather marked by cold winds and blustery showers but gradually eased to warmer and sunnier conditions for most by the end of the week. The same week last year equally saw chilly and overcast conditions which marked the start of Autumn.”

Overall footfall slightly grew by +0.2% compared to the equivalent week last year. Retail parks the best improvement in footfall results this week, rising by +3.9%, followed by shopping centres with an increase of +1.4%. High street footfall, however, declined by -2.2%.
