Discount department store retailer returns to profit

Discount department store retailer TJ Hughes has reported a return to profit despite a decline in sales.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 December 2023, total sales fell 4.3% to £26.5m from £27.7m in 2022.

TJ Hughes posted an EBITDA of 3% for the year, while pre-tax profit amounted to £139,000, improving from a loss of £413,000 recorded the previous year.

Stated within its report, the company said: “The results for the year to 31 December 2023 have been encouraging after the difficulties of recent years which were affected by the Pandemic, as the company returned to profitability and improved levels of trade.

“Going forward it is expected that trade will continue to improve as shoppers return to the High Street.”
