Homeware high street sales end September down

Homeware sales fell on the high street once again, marking the category’s twenty-fourth negative result so far in 2024.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose 2.59% for the week ending 29 September 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales fell by -5.87% this week from a base of -2.61% for the same week last year, signifying the category’s twenty-fourth negative result so far in 2024.

Store homewares LFL sales rose by +2.13% from a base of -0.33% for the same week last year, marking the category’s seventeenth positive result so far in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales slipped by -0.36% this week from a base of +0.21% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales climbed by +5.25% failing to offset a base of -5.42% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Positive non-store sales buoyed total LFL sales result this week as trade in bricks-and-mortar venues returned a negative outcome.

“The weather this week was wetter and soggy as heavy rains and strong winds swept across the UK bringing about colder temperatures. The same week last year experienced a mixed bag of wet and windy conditions with overcast and periods of brief sunshine.”

Overall footfall slightly declined by -4.0% compared to the corresponding week last year. With a decrease of -6.0%, high street footfall recorded the steepest drop this week, followed by shopping centres with -2.1% and retail parks with -1.5%.
