Chinese bedside table rejected at border over safety concerns

A Chinese bedside table has been rejected at the UK border after presenting a serious risk of electric shock due to access to live parts.

The product, which originates from China and has a consignment reference of CAAU5029201, 24GB4SAEPFVVOT1AR3, is described as a bedside table with speaker, USB connections and a wireless charging tabletop.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards stated: “The product presents a serious risk of electric shock as the product’s plug does not meet the dimensional requirements of BS 1363 and no evidence of overall product compliance has been provided.

“If the user were to grip the plug in order to remove it from the socket without switching the socket off first, due to the placement of the plug’s pins, the user’s fingers may make contact with the live parts and therefore may receive an electric shock.

“The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994. The import has been rejected at the border and destroyed.”
