Family carpet retailer Calvert’s Carpets has submitted plans to build a new warehouse just over 20 miles from its Thirsk base.

According to planning documents submitted to Richmondshire District Council, the retailer has proposed to build a new 14,600sq ft warehouse with a showroom and counter on Catterick Road in Colburn.

The plans state that the new facility would be ‘an acceptable relationship to neighbouring property and would be of a scale and design commensurate and compatible with its surroundings’, adding that it would also be a ‘sustainable location for the type of operation proposed’.

Recommendations on the proposals to be given the green light have been put forward to the council’s planning committee, however, there has been one objection to the plans.

Brough St Giles Parish Council has stated that the plans ‘would fully deny local residents of the right to live a peaceful existence’ and would ‘increase traffic noise and vehicle pollution’, with the area becoming ‘heavily congested’.

Countering this objection, the planning documents said there would be 38 car parking spaces provided and it would promote a sustainable economy in the area through job creation.

Further supporting the proposals, a planning officer report states that Calvert’s Carpets plans would ‘have significantly less potential to generate adverse noise impacts’ than other applications from businesses including Burger King and Starbucks.

Calvert’s Carpets has been established since 1972 and operates from 15 locations across Yorkshire and Teeside.
