The Furniture Makers’ Company, in partnership with The Church of England, is excited to announce the launch of the Empty Chair Design Award, a unique competition that invites young furniture designers and makers from across the UK to create a prototype chair that embodies the poignant symbolism of loss and absence.
The Empty Chair Design Award, which officially launches at the 2024 Young Furniture Makers exhibition on 2 October, is open to any student or recent graduate in full-time education, or those who have completed a private or commercial furniture design course in the UK. Participants from colleges, universities, and other educational institutions are welcome to apply.
Chris Hyde, training and education chairman at The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the Church of England on the Empty Chair Design Award. The purpose of the competition is to create a chair that will serve as a powerful reminder of those who feel excluded – whether due to gender, race, class, age, disability, or other factors.”
Submissions will be reviewed by a judging panel consisting of representatives from the Church of England and The Furniture Makers’ Company, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives. Five shortlisted designs will be exhibited at the 2025 Young Furniture Makers Exhibition, where the final judging will take place.
The winning design will receive the Empty Chair Design Award, with two runners-up also being recognised. The winning design will be potentially considered for batch production and installation in churches across the country.
Chris added: “Participants are expected to work methodically through the design and prototype process, from initial concept development through to the final prototype. The design process will include research, sketching, model making, mock-ups, and technical drawings, culminating in the creation of a fully functional prototype. A key aspect of this competition is the emphasis on craftsmanship and attention to detail, with the prototype needing to be meticulously crafted to meet ergonomic, strength, and proportion requirements.”
Guy Hewitt, director of the Church of England’s Racial Justice Unit, said: “We are looking at non-traditional ways of engaging young people and our worshipping communities on issues of justice and inclusion.”
