Homeware high street sales deliver mixed result at July end

Homeware sales fell on the high street, while store sales rose indicating a twelfth positive result so far in 2024.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 2.97% for the week ending 28 July 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales fell by -4.91% this week from a base of -3.75% for the same week last year, which marks the category’s fifth negative result in the last ten weeks.

Store homewares LFL sales increased by +0.13% from a good base of +4.88% for the same week last year, symbolising the category’s twelfth positive outcome so far in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales grew by +2.81% from a base of +5.08% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales climbed by +3.79% from a negative base of -5.44% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “Non-store has now been the best performing channel for thirteen straight weeks and has continued to give a significant boost to total LFL sales.

“The UK saw changeable weather pattern this week with a mixture of sunshine, showers and some longer spells of rain in some parts. The same week last year saw the UK experiencing mixed weather conditions, which included showers, overcast and sunny spells.”

Overall footfall grew by +1.3% compared to the same week last year. With a growth of +3.6%, high street footfall saw the highest increase this week, while retail park footfall was flat at +0.6%. On the other hand, shopping centres saw footfall decline by -2.9%.
