Homeware high street sales fall yet again in May

Homeware sales fell again on the high street, marking a fourth straight week of negative sales.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales fell 1.43% for the week ending 18 May 2025.

Homewares total LFLs tumbled by -2.62% from a base of -3.82% for the same week in 2024, representing the category’s fourth consecutive negative result.

Store homewares sales dropped by -2.49% from a weak base of -4.67% for the same week last year, marking the category’s third negative result in the past four weeks.

Total store LFL sales dipped by -0.97% from a negative base of -0.46% for the same week in 2024. Total non-store LFL sales dropped by -3.95% from a solid base of +12.43% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “LFL sales decreased across all retail segments and channels this week, especially online retail. Non-store has been within negative territory for four consecutive weeks; the first time such has happened since March 2024.

“The weather was mostly sunny but cooler, meanwhile, there were cloudy skies and showers in some parts of the country. The UK’s weather during the same week last year was a mix of warm and sunny conditions with sparse clouds and sporadic showers.”

Overall footfall was flat this week, seeing an increase of +0.1%. Retail parks saw foot traffic grow by +0.5%. Retail park foot traffic increased by +1.0%, while high streets experienced a fall of -0.5%.
