Homeware high street sales remain in positive territory

Homeware sales grew slightly on the high street, indicating an eleventh positive result so far in 2024.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales rose by 5.18% for the week ending 21 July 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales grew +0.85% this week from a base of +6.02% for the same week last year, signifying the category’s eleventh positive result so far in 2024.

Store homewares LFL sales declined by -1.12% from a very healthy base of +20.42% for the same week last year, marking the category’s eighteenth negative outcome so far in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales were flat, slightly increasing by +0.42% from a strong base of +7.17% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales skyrocketed by +15.21%, easily offsetting a weak base of -4.34% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “As the UK enjoyed glorious weather this week, fashion was the best performing segment, potentially driven by increased spending on summer clothing and ongoing promotional sales by some retailers.

“The UK experienced very warm weather this week as a mini-heatwave swept across the country, recording the hottest day of the year so far with the mercury hitting 30°C in some parts. The same week last year saw unseasonal weather with cool temperatures, strong winds and overcast.”

Overall footfall grew by +1.3% compared to the equivalent week last year. High street footfall scaled up by +4.0% compared to the same week in 2024, while shopping centres saw a decline of -2.7% and retail parks witnessed a slight drop of -0.5%.
