Mattress brand Emma to cut around 200 jobs

Mattress brand Emma Sleep has revealed plans to reduce its global workforce as it realigns expectations for 2024.

It is understood that Emma will cut 200 jobs, 18% of its staff, due to ‘volatile global economic conditions’.

Emma said that it is committed to facilitating a ‘fair and supportive’ process for those affected by the job cuts, with the company revising its expectations for the year due to tough market conditions.

The news follows its recent opening of its first UK store in London’s Westfield White City shopping centre, which is part of an expansion strategy to open more stand-alone stores in Britain.

Emma added that it remains ‘focused’ on navigating challenges and will continue to provide ‘quality products to its customers’.

Earlier this year, Emma finished 2023 with revenues exceeding $1bn. The company grew its sales by 13% year-on-year and recorded its sixth consecutive year of profitability.

However, to support its ongoing growth, the business integrated new operational and financial systems, but these transitions have been more complex than first anticipated.

More recently, Emma has been issued a letter by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) threatening court proceedings over changes to its practices. Read more here.
