Reduced demand in outdoor furniture impacts garden centre

Outdoor and indoor furniture retailer Whitehall Garden Centres has reported a decline in sales but a return to positive EBITDA.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 May 2024, total sales fell 14% to £16.1m from £18.8m in 2023.

EBITDA stood at £360,000, improving from a negative figure of £1.1m. Pre-tax losses resulted at £519,000, narrowing from a loss of £1.6m recorded the previous year.

Stated within its report, the company, which operates three centres in Lacock Wiltshire, Whitchurch Bristol and Woodborough Pewsey Wiltshire, said: “Company revenue has decreased by £2.7m. This is mainly due to the outdoor furniture department which saw a decline in sales from the peak during Covid.

“Stock levels have decreased by £2.1m to £2.7m, which again, is largely due to the reduced demand for outdoor furniture. The significant improvement (in EBITDA) has been achieved by driving the sales across the business, particularly the restaurants which continue to see higher footfall.”
