Carpet retailer unable to recover following director death

Carpet retailer Williams Bros struggled to cope after the death of one of its directors ahead of its final closure.

Manubhai Mistry and Hemal Mistry, of Horsfields, were appointed as joint administrators of carpet retailer Williams Bros. Limited on 5 August 2024.

Leading up its collapse, the business suffered after the main driving force behind the company, Lee Williams, sadly passed away in 2022 leaving the business in “disarray”.

“Without Lee’s input, the business struggled and with creditors building up the sole remaining director, Stanley Williams contacted Horsfields to review the position. It was concluded that the company was insolvent and urgent action was required,” the administrators report said.

At the time of appointment, latest company records showed a decline in sales from £1.1m for the year ended 31 May 2022 to £772,000 for the year ended May 2023, with losses amounting to £12,000 compared to its prior profit of £141,000.

The company had ceased trading during August 2024 with creditors expected to suffer a shortfall of £118,000. The HMRC is owed £34,000 while employees are owed around £37,000.
