Homeware high street sales unable to remain positive

Homeware sales fell on the high street, marking the category’s twenty-second negative result so far in 2024.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales fell 3.87% for the week ending 22 September 2024.

Homeware total LFL sales sank by -9.14% this week from a base of +7.14% for the same week last year, symbolising the category’s twenty-second negative result so far in 2024.

Store homewares LFL sales went down by -0.08% from a base of +13.82% for the same week last year, denoting the category’s twenty-fourth negative outcome so far in 2024.

Total in-store LFL sales declined by -2.31% this week from a base of +8.57% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales slipped by -2.76% from a base of +2.73% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “This week’s result marks the twelfth week so far this year that total LFL sales have fallen into negative territory, as both store and non-store sales recorded poor outcomes, albeit from positive base results for the same week last year.

“This week’s negative non-store sales outcome brings to an end a run of positive results that began in the penultimate week of March.

“This week saw settled weather marked by predominantly dry and warm conditions with clear blue skies. In contrast, during the same week last year the UK experienced Autumnal conditions with heavy rain and low temperatures.”

Overall footfall slightly increased by +1.4% compared to the equivalent week last year. High street footfall improved by +2.7%, while footfall in retail parks and shopping centres slightly declined by -0.02% and -0.1% respectively.
