Independent suffers property damage following bizarre theft

Independent furniture retailer Roger James Furnishers has suffered a burglary at its store in Swadlincote.

The incident, the first time the business has ever been a victim of theft in 34 years, took place in the early hours of Saturday morning on 19 November 2022.

CCTV capturing the incident revealed how the burglar attempted to gain access through the door, then later using a brick to smash a large window, which failed. They then smashed through the door and ripped the panel out.

The business said that the only item that was stolen was an Orang-utan home accessories sculpture, worth £299.

Chrissy Jones, owner of the store, was forced to close the shop for the day to clean up the shattered glass and repair the door, stating that it has left the family run business ‘shook up’.

The company has informed the police.
